Our film branch produces and presents short films, documentaries, animation, and
feature-length movies by new or little-known filmmakers (including members of our own
team). Once these projects are in post-production, this site will have information on
where you can view these films, how to arrange for Menace Publishing & Manufacture to
bring an Obscura film to your theater, nightclub, or other public screening place, and
(eventually) how to order these films on video.
Though MP&M sponsored readings and performances will be handled by our performance and exhibition division, videos of these events will be
available through this page.
We put artistic and narrative success before commercial varieties, and we're dedicated to
making films that walk the fine line between post-Hollywood cinema and whiny art-house
crap.
Which, actually, we're finding kind of easy. The money thing, on the other hand ... well,
we'll keep you posted.
Our current production schedule is ambitious, to say the least. We have a few projects in
various stages of production, and several more in the planning stages. Information on some
of our current projects appears below. Check back for frequent updates as more information
becomes available.

He can sit, roll over, shake, speak,
sing, fetch, play dead, and a few other non-standard dog tricks. Is there anything he can't do? This short film is still in production |

Thugs, the story of two young
men who rely on brutal violence, calculated cruelty, and power tools to make their way in
the world. A feature length film still in the early stages of production, Thugs
promises to be one of most loved feel-good movies of its era ... if watching two ruthless
bastards torment everyone around them makes you feel good. This film brings to life the motivations, fears, and deepest desires of two guys whose only friends are drink, cheese pizza, and each other. Thumper and Stony are the kind of guys you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, in a
well lit alley, or pretty much anywhere else. When they aren't terrorizing (mostly)
innocent victims, they're talking about it, reenacting their favorite past exploits, or
planning their next senseless attack. |

This title of this short film,
translated from the original Finnish, is quot;Sometimes He Is Latequot;. Shot in
the suburbs of Helsinki on a grey and remorseless spring day, this film documents an
unorthodox business meeting that goes woefully awry. This short film is still in production |
There's a lot of buzz and BS these days about independent film makers. It's a real
craze -- so much so that it almost guarantees a film labeled quot;indie" some measure
of sucess. Like anything successful, it's being poked and prodded by the men behind the
curtain, weighed and measured and analyzed so they can figure out how to shove it in a
package and sell it.
Hey, don't get us wrong. There's nothing wrong with movies like The Lost World or Batman
Eighteen or whatever. We go to see some of those movies in the theater, and we'll watch anything
on cable once or twice. Everything has its place.
But don't shove some well-intentioned $199,999.00 movie down our throats and try to sell
it to us as an independent production because it's got a budget of less than a million
bucks.
All of our productions are shot by a handful of people for a little more than a handful of
cash. That doesn't mean they suck, or that they even look like the old style, grainy Super
8 badly dubbed independent film. Technology has come a long way, and you can get some damn
good results with some pretty unfancy equipment these days. It does mean that we've had to
be dedicated to making these films to overcome the obstacles small budget productions
face, and that each and every Obscura production is going to be a labor of love first and
foremost. They're going to reflect that dedication and passion in ways that some of the
bigger quot;independentquot; movies can only approximate.
At least until one of our projects makes it big and we sell out, at which point you're all
entitled to a ride in our Range Rover.
